Fence painting cost depends on the length, height, faces, details and condition of the fence, plus access and the selected coating. Give every painter the same measured scope. A price "per panel" is difficult to compare unless the panel size, sides and preparation are defined.

For a fence painting enquiry in Dundalk, send a full view of each run, close-ups of worn areas and approximate measurements. Include your location and whether one or both sides are wanted. Photos start the discussion; timber condition and access may need checking at a visit.

Measure length, height and sides

Divide the boundary into runs of similar height and construction. Measure from safe ground level and record approximate length and painted height in metres. If the garden slopes or the fence steps, split those sections so the estimate does not rely on one height for the whole boundary.

Record the faces included. Painting your garden side is different from painting both faces, and the reverse may have rails or posts that add work. Establish permission and practical access before including a neighbour-facing side. A boundary location does not prove ownership or authorisation.

Avoid counting the same post in two adjacent runs. A simple labelled sketch helps make the inventory consistent. If measurements are approximate, say so rather than presenting them as a final survey.

Include posts, rails and separate details

A solid panel face is not the whole fence. Rails, cappings, posts and board edges can add area and application time. Trellis has many small edges, while overlapping boards can hide surfaces that are not reachable from one side. These details explain why equal lengths do not always produce equal quotes.

Identify concrete posts and gravel boards separately from timber. Some garden products approve more than one material, others do not. Matching the colour does not make the substrate requirements identical. Do not assume gates, sheds, decking or garden furniture are included in a fence allowance.

The Ronseal Fence Life Plus page identifies rough-sawn and smooth-planed timber as uses for that named product. It also distinguishes its use from decking or furniture. That is a useful reminder to list the actual items and confirm permissions, rather than buying one tub for every garden surface.

For material quantity, use the paint quantity guide and worked fence example. Area and coverage help estimate product, but do not directly calculate labour. Preparation, details, moving around planting and access still need their own allowance.

Preparation, access and materials

Describe the timber and previous treatment if known. Sound weathered timber, peeling coating and soft damaged boards are different starting conditions. Painting does not repair an unstable fence or replace decayed panels. Record any repairs to be completed separately before the painting assessment.

Rough-sawn and planed timber can have different product restrictions and coat requirements. The Ronseal One Coat Shed & Fence Protector page specifies rough-sawn use, unlike the broader timber permissions of Fence Life Plus. A lower-priced tub is not a saving if it is unsuitable for the fence.

Access is often the hidden difference. A run behind dense planting may need clearing before work; a narrow gap may prevent safe reach. State who moves furniture, pots or stored items. Do not assume garden cutting-back or fence removal is included with decoration.

Ask whether materials, sundries, preparation, protection and any applicable VAT are included. A retail paint price is a material cost at a particular date, not a professional labour quotation. A product protection claim is not a guarantee that the existing timber will remain sound for that period.

Hypothetical example: Fence A and Fence B are each 12 metres long. A is low, accessible and sound, with one face included. B is taller, has both faces, heavy rails and loose old coating behind shrubs. Applying the same per-metre allowance would ignore nearly every factor that distinguishes the jobs.

Compare the same written job scope

There is no verified Dundalk fence price list attached to this guide. Fresh search results include US cost tables and broad Irish painting guides, but they do not provide a dated local price for your measured fence. Converting dollars or treating a retail tub price as labour would create false precision.

A useful quote comparison states the runs and dimensions, included faces and details, known old treatment, preparation assumption, named coating and required coats. It also records access, protection and repair exclusions. If a detail is unresolved, clarify it before comparing totals.

  • Same dated fence inventory supplied to each painter.
  • One or both faces clearly stated.
  • Posts, rails, trellis, gate and edges named.
  • Surface condition and unknown old treatments described.
  • Compatible coating and materials inclusion clear.
  • Repair and vegetation responsibilities recorded.
  • Any applicable VAT and quotation conditions stated.

For house walls in the same enquiry, use the exterior cost guide separately. House elevations and timber fence runs are different measured scopes even when the aim is one overall garden refresh.

A measurement example without a price

For a hypothetical solid run 12 metres long and 1.8 metres high, the simple face area is 12 × 1.8 = 21.6m². Including the opposite face gives 43.2m² before separately accounting for rails, posts, edges or other details. An open or overlapping design needs interpretation rather than automatic subtraction of every gap. This calculation describes the scope, not the labour cost or final litres. Apply the actual product coverage and coat specification separately, and retain the access and condition notes alongside it. That way two enquiries can refer to the same measured boundary even when the preparation still needs assessment.

Fence pricing questions

Is a panel count enough to enquire? It is a useful start if you include panel dimensions, photos and the faces wanted. Panels vary in height, construction and detail. Say whether posts, rails and gates are included rather than assuming the count communicates the complete job.

Will painting both sides simply double the price? Not necessarily. The reverse may have a different profile or access, while some set-up tasks are shared. Ask for the actual two-face scope instead of applying a fixed multiplier. Confirm permission for the reverse before including it.

Can I buy the paint before getting the fence assessed? You can discuss a preferred product, but confirm timber type, previous treatment, compatibility and quantity first. Buying a large amount in advance can restrict the choice to a system that does not suit the surface. Material supply responsibilities should be agreed in the quotation.
