6 minute read · Woodwork and coating choices
The cost of painting woodwork depends on what is included and how much preparation each piece needs. Count doors, frames, skirting boards and stair details separately. A room with a small wall area can still contain a full day of detailed preparation; measuring the walls alone will not describe that work.
For a home in Dundalk or a nearby area, a useful first step is a trim inventory and a few clear photographs. These help start a discussion about interior painting. A visit may still be needed to assess adhesion, damaged edges, access and the existing finish. The worksheet below helps you ask for comparable scopes without relying on a price copied from a different house.
List each door, frame and length of trim
Start in one room and work clockwise. Give each door a location, such as kitchen to hall, so nobody counts the same shared door twice. Record whether you want one face, both faces, the visible edges and the frame painted. Door leaves, frames and architraves are different pieces of work. A quote saying "six doors" leaves too much room for misunderstanding.
For skirting boards, record an approximate length and note furniture that prevents access. Describe whether the profile is plain or detailed and whether it continues behind fitted furniture. You do not need survey-level measurements to enquire, but it helps to distinguish an accessible straight run from short sections interrupted by pipes, cabinets and door frames.
| Item | Record in your inventory | Clarify before accepting a quote |
|---|---|---|
| Door leaves | Number, faces and panel pattern | Are edges, preparation and colour changes included? |
| Frames and architraves | Number of openings, including unpainted sides | Are stops and the hall side included? |
| Skirting boards | Approximate length, profile and access | Who moves furniture and what stays inaccessible? |
| Stair woodwork | Handrails, spindles, newels and strings | Are treads and risers excluded? |
| Other trim | Picture rails, timber sills or cupboards | Is each item suitable for the agreed system? |
Do not add radiators, fitted furniture or specialist surfaces to a woodwork allowance by assumption. They may need a different coating and a separate discussion of scope. For a wider room repaint, use the same inventory beside the interior painting cost guide so ceilings, walls and trim remain clear.

Preparation versus decorative area
The visible area is only part of the job. A sound, clean painted door and a similar door with peeling edges do not have the same preparation needs. Chipped corners, old filler, greasy contact areas and repeated layers around the hinges can change what is reasonable before the finish coats begin.
Ask the painter to describe the preparation allowance in everyday terms: cleaning, dealing with loose coating, local filling, smoothing and the primer or undercoat required by the selected system. Avoid insisting that every surface is stripped or that every surface needs the same primer. The right specification depends on the condition and on whether the existing coating is compatible. Our doors and skirting preparation guide explains those decisions.
The Dulux Trade Quick Dry Satinwood product information, for example, describes a water-based interior wood and metal finish. It is a specific product, not a promise that any satin paint suits any old coating. Ask for the actual product name and the preparation system rather than an unspecified "satin finish".
Unknown older coatings deserve assessment before disturbance. More aggressive preparation is not automatically better, and a decorative quotation does not establish that hazardous material removal is included. If the coating history raises concerns, agree how that uncertainty will be resolved before comparing the final prices.
Profiles, rails and access
Detailed mouldings take attention because there are more edges and recesses than a plain board suggests. Spindles need access around several faces. A handrail may have a worn top and a less accessible underside. These details make a single square-metre comparison less useful than an itemised description.
Access includes everyday use of the home. Can doors remain open while the coating dries? Does the hall have to stay usable throughout? Can furniture be moved away from skirting boards? Mention pets, children, mobility needs and essential routes at enquiry stage. These are planning facts, not reasons to promise a fixed completion time before the job has been assessed.
Also identify any joinery concerns. A door that catches, loose stair parts or softened timber may need attention outside painting. Repainting can change the appearance of sound joinery; it does not correct a damaged door or certify a fire door. State any separate repair responsibility in the scope so the painting price does not hide an unresolved dependency.
Compare dated like-for-like Irish scopes
There is no verified Dundalk woodwork price list attached to this guide. A national online range can help you understand the market, but it cannot establish what this business will charge for your doors. Read the date, the unit and the exclusions before using any published figure.
The Onlinetradesmen cost guide dated 17 February 2025 distinguishes labour estimates from materials and VAT. That distinction matters more than lifting its figures into a new estimate. Its door and woodwork categories are broad and are not an itemised quotation for your property.
Here is a hypothetical comparison, not a customer job or price. Enquiry A says "paint four doors". Enquiry B says "four panelled leaves, both faces and agreed edges; four frames and architraves; existing white coating with worn lower edges; new white finish; hardware protection; materials and taxes stated". Even without a euro amount, B is much easier to assess and compare.
- Use the same dated inventory for every enquiry.
- Ask whether materials and any applicable VAT are included.
- State the colour, finish and named coating when agreed.
- List preparation assumptions and what happens if hidden failure is found.
- Record access, moving furniture, hardware responsibilities and exclusions.
- Check whether adding a room changes the scope rather than assuming a unit discount.
If one quotation is lower, compare the omitted items first. It may cover fewer faces, exclude frames or allow for a different preparation level. Ask for clarification in writing; an apparent saving is difficult to judge while the job descriptions differ. For fitted wall detail, the panelling cost guide separates painting from materials and unconfirmed fitting arrangements.
Practical questions
Does a door price include the frame?
Only if the scope says so. A leaf, its frame, architraves and visible edges are different surfaces. Record the faces and surrounding pieces you want included, particularly where one door connects two rooms. That avoids counting the same leaf twice while overlooking the frame.
Can trim be quoted from photographs alone?
Photos help establish the inventory and show visible wear, but they may not reveal adhesion, hidden damage or awkward access. Treat them as the starting information for an enquiry. A visit may be needed before the preparation allowance and final scope can be settled.
Is white always the least expensive colour choice?
Not necessarily. Existing colour, opacity, staining, product and preparation matter. Repainting yellowed or dark woodwork in a pale finish can need a different system from refreshing a similar sound colour. Compare the specified work rather than assuming a standard price difference between white and coloured trim.
